Family-Based  Immigrant Visas

Immediate Relative Categories (No Annual Limits)


Spouses of U.S. Citizens

  • IR-1: Spouse of U.S. Citizen

  • CR-1: Conditional Resident Spouse (marriages less than 2 years)

Fiancé(e) Visas

  • K-1: Fiancé(e) of U.S. Citizen

  • K-2: Children of K-1 visa holder

  • Must marry within 90 days of arrival

Children of U.S. Citizens

  • IR-2: Unmarried children under 21

  • IR-3: Orphans adopted abroad

  • IR-4: Orphans to be adopted in U.S.

Parents of U.S. Citizens

  • IR-5: Parents of U.S. citizens (petitioner must be 21 or older)

Family Preference Categories (Subject to Annual Limits)


First Preference (F1)

  • Unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of U.S. citizens

Second Preference (F2)

  • F2A: Spouses and minor children of permanent residents

  • F2B: Unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of permanent residents

Third Preference (F3)

  • Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens

 Fourth Preference (F4)

  • Brothers and sisters of adult U.S. citizens
